Phoenix read We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Phoenix read We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury recently. There is a lot to appreciate in this book.  A father and his four kids and their dog are off on a bear hunt, traveling through long grass, a river, mud, a snowstorm and a forest and they are creating a memory together while enjoying the great outdoors. The words "We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful Day! We're not scared," are repeated throughout the book before approaching a new landmark during their adventure, such as "long, wavy grass" they have to "go through..." or  "A deep, cold river."

The illustrations by Helen Oxenbury are energetic (you can almost here the kids in the illustration yelling "YAY a forest!"), beautiful and look like watercolors and are vibrant. I love how when the characters are approaching the next obstacle to go through the illustration is black and white, like a charcoal illustration, then when you turn the page and the characters are Swishying through grass or Splashing through the river the illustrations are in color.

Enjoy this interview with Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury on creating the book.

The best part about this book is that YOU can go on a bear hunt with your child/babies or toddlers after reading this! Right in your own town or neighborhood you can go hunting for birds, wild life or the best walking stick!

Find this book on Amazon, BN.com and Indiebound.

Have fun making your storytimes an adventure!
